Health
Things have been going fairly well health wise since my last update. No migraines, no doctors visits. About the only thing worth mentioning is the continued night sweats and the continued difficulty sleeping. The night sweats is what it is. I don't like waking up drenched in sweat. It's gross. I've found wearing some PJs (the ones I use when traveling, just a pair of sleeping pants from Amazon and a 35 year old t-shirt that's so soft and worn that it feels like a cloud caressing you) stops me from soaking the sheets and blanket, though they themselves get wet. And my pillow, where my neck and face touch it. I've also found that if I'm completely under the covers, I sweat all over. If I'm warm and pull the covers mostly off of me, piling it up into a ball in front of me to 'hug' I only sweat where I'm pressed against the blanket. It's be nice if I could just sleep without a blanket, but we keep the house on the cold side. Any time I've tried to sleep without a blanket entirely, I wake up with it over me anyway. Evidently sleeping me insists on having a blanky.
The trouble sleeping is more insidious since it's less predictable. Lately, like the past three or four days, it's meant waking up far too early and not being able to go back to sleep. I'm talking about getting up at like four thirty in the morning. That naturally leads me to not just wanting a nap later in the day, but needing it. I still get tired and try to maintain a normal 'bed time' of around eleven in the evening, but I'll wake up between four and seven in the morning. Not great for having a regular amount of sleep. Then there's the reasons to get out of bed and not just lie there. Nausea and the urge to have a BM. I know my digestive system is a little more sensitive these days. That's mainly the meds I'm on all working together. I'll wake up with the need to vomit. I get up, walk to the bathroom, stand in front of the toilet, and then bam, vomit. The act of vomiting has cleared the nausea so much that I'm able to clean it up immediately (something that I can't do when I remain nauseated). The urge to have a BM is bothersome as I know my body doesn't 'need' to go at that moment. And in fact when I 'go' as soon as I get out of bed, I'm never able to go fully. Invariably, I'll have to 'go' again in about an hour. My 'normal' habit was a once a day BM, about a half hour after my first sip of coffee. That worked great for like a couple decades. I wasn't like a swiss watch or anything, I didn't always go in the mornings and I sometimes went at other times, but it was my 'normal'. Now I'll wake up with these more sudden urges and then have to go again later in the day. Or I'll go days without a BM, making the need to go later more problematic as I'm constipated at that point.
Anyway, sorry about the poo talk. I guess it's a good thing when my health concerns are down to just that!
Finances
Nothing new here.
I did get an email back in January about a data breach from a mail order pharmacy that I didn't use. it told me I was part of the settlement and that if I signed up I'd get a piece of the money. I had researched it at the time and it was a legitimate class action lawsuit that had been won. I signed up and just assumed I wouldn't hear anything else about it. Lo and behold, I got a check for $100 yesterday regarding the settlement. Nice!
Family/Friends
B's anxiety seems to be getting worse. He's still working with his doctor on it and she's upped his meds. They've also worked out some family leave for his work (it's not exactly the same thing as our FMLA or Family Medical Leave Act since he works at a casino on an Indian Reservation and they don't have to follow our labor laws... but it's close enough and his doctors are getting him the paperwork he needs in order to not go into work.
We talked quite a bit yesterday about it and compared notes. I've had panic attacks before, but I at least knew where mine came from. Crowds. Put me in a tightly packed area with a lot of people and I just freak out. B doesn't know what triggers his, but he has a similar 'fight or flight' response. Obviously he can't deal with that while dealing cards on the casino floor.
B's new car is still in the shop getting its engine replaced. They're hoping to get it finished next week. They said the 'new' engine will come with a one year warranty and B is inquiring if they will offer an extended powertrain warranty.
Entertainment
I finished Invincible and it's stand alone prequel movie about Atom Eve. I really like that series and look forward to new seasons. Evidently they're almost done with season 4 and are already planning a season 5. I'm watching the new season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds but I'll talk about the season as a whole when it's done in a couple weeks.
I did move back into watching Mayor of Kingstown and... meh. I'm only on the third episode but it's not catching me like the other Taylor Sheridan series have done (Tulsa King, Yellowstone, Lioness, Landman). I'll give it the rest of the season but if it doesn't hook me, I'll drop it.
New Tech
The Made By Google event was good and there wasn't anything bad about the new Pixel lineup. The only issue is that while the Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro, and the Pixel 10 Pro XL all came out the following week, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold doesn't come out until October. I have mine pre-ordered and it will be delivered the first week in October, but damn it I want it NOW. That want was emphasized yesterday while watching football. It wasn't a special day by any means. I woke up, charged my phone to 80% and took it off the charger at eight thirty in the morning. I used it to place B's and my bets for the day and then periodically check on said bets and occasionally 'doomscroll' (check out my social media feeds) while watching the games. By the time we were ordering dinner at six thirty in the evening, my phone was down to 15% battery. I put it on the charger but had to take it off again when we ordered dinner (I ordered it, so it had to be my phone). It had charged up to 22%. But just ordering dinner and then leaving the screen on to watch the DoorDash driver get and deliver our food, took the battery back down to 13%.
The battery is just dead. I almost want to buy a new phone just to get me by until October. A Pixel 9A would only cost me like $300 and I could give that to Mom or one of my nephews afterward. But I'd be pissed off moving 'down' to a 9A, even for a month. So the Pixel 10? But its not much better, I'd want the improved cameras. So the Pixel 10 Pro? But the screen is kind of small compared to my huge foldable. So the Pixel 10 Pro XL? But you see, I've walked myself up to a $1200 month long stop gap phone and NO that's not worth it.
I'm not traveling for the next month so there isn't any strong need to get a new phone. I'll just limp by on my phone and then celebrate harder with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes in.
Writing
I have a couple posts about You're Not The Boss Of Me and have started writing that story on CHYOA. I'm really into it and want to write a LOT. I won't got into much detail about it here, but it feels damned good to be happily writing again.
Michigan Football
College Football season started last week with a few games on Week 0 and big time this weekend with Week 1 games. There's already a bunch of 'too early' reactions. Ohio State beat Texas so Arch Manning isn't any good and Texas won't even win the SEC, let alone make the playoff. Alabama lost to Florida State so Kelen Deboer is a terrible coach, Florida State is back, and Alabama is terrible this year. LSU beat Clemson so LSU is going to win the SEC and the National Championship.
Bah. It's way to early for any of that.
I will say it was great to have a 'normal' Saturday of football. B came over, we had breakfast with Mom and chatted. We went into the living room where we discussed all the days games and took our bets (more on that in a bit), then watched Game Day. We watched more of Game Day than we normally do (we always have it on in the background on Saturday mornings, but we were quiet and WATCHED it more this morning) because it was Lee Corso's last show. Then at Noon we watched Texas at Ohio State, at 3:30 we watched Alabama at Florida State, and at 7:30 we watched New Mexico at Michigan. For the first two games we flipped around and watched parts of many many games while we didn't watch much of anything else during the Michigan game.
On betting, B and I have had two decent years. Two years ago we were up almost all season and ended up about $100 up. Last year we got so low that we had to buy in with more money, BUT with a huge late season bet on Michigan to beat Ohio State, we got most of it back. We ended up UP for the season, including our late buy in with more money. This year we're basically following the same playbook, but we're adding a new wrinkle.
Normally we don't bet on Michigan. First, we're biased. Duh. Second, the lines are generally too skewed and we don't want to be upset at the game when Michigan is winning, but not by 'enough' to cover the bet. And third, we'd just hate to lose money on Michigan. But this year, we decided to step up as fans and bet on Michigan EVERY week. The catch is that we'll always take the money line. If you don't know about gambling, there is normally a 'Vegas' line. Last night the line was Michigan minus 34.5 points. If Michigan wins by 34 points, we'd lose the bet. If they win by 35 points, we win, and it's a decent payout. The moneyline bet is just betting on a winner. OBVIOUSLY Michigan is supposed to win, so the payout is tiny. Like bet $10 and only win $1 (plus the $10 buy in). A regular vs the line bet would pay closer to $10 (plus the $10 buy in).
Last night, however, we found a wrinkle and had to set a precedent for the remainder of the season. The sportbook we use (Fan Duel, it's perfectly legal here in Michigan) didn't offer a moneyline bet on Michigan. So now if they don't offer a moneyline, we'll take the vegas line, no matter what the line is. Michigan won last night, but not by 34.5 points or more, meaning we enjoyed the game but were disappointed as we lost the bet.
Ah well, it was still fun.
Next week Michigan travels to Oklahoma. Game Day will be there and it will be the primary game at night meaning Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler will be calling it. YAY! I'm all for the B1G being on FOX, FS1, CBS, and NBC, but college football just feels better on ESPN and the best games are called by Kirk and Chris.
Computer Issues
So the computer was running like ass. Well, technically the computer is running a bit slow. I've noticed it in Photoshop and from switching from app to app. But the main slowdown I was noticing was in Chrome. To test it out I uninstalled all of my Chrome extensions and it sped right up. I let it run for a few days and everything was fine and smooth. I then added in my password manager (By the Goddess it's a pain without that manager extension!) and it continued to run fine. I think the Ad Blocker might be next... I just don't want to find out that it's the one mucking things up as... well... I hate seeing all the fucking Ads!
Job Search
I'm still in the same holding pattern that I was. I'll give the prison application a full month before I consider what to do next. That will be the end of next week. So, I don't know what I'll do and I'm not spending any time thinking (worrying) about it. Hopefully I get a call for an interview before then.
