We left off with J telling me that the HUM wanted to interview me and was just waiting to see if she could do it on Monday or Tuesday. Both days went by with no word. No call, no email, no nothing. I still held off on immediately reaching out as I don't want to appear desperate or needy. Even if I had the big reminder of my financial situation. When I did my end of month finances on July 1st, Monday, I had to withdraw a bunch of money from my 401k. It wouldn't have been different if I had an interview, but it was just a big financial reminder that I really do need to get back to work.
Anyway, I was going to hold out until Friday even if it was the holiday. J, though, reached out to me on Thursday to see if I had my interview 'yet'. I of course responded no, and that I hadn't heard anything at all, but that did buoy my spirit quite a bit. J isn't one for fake optimism, and that sounded like she honestly expected me to have had my interview. She responded with 'you know how the state is' and said that she'd ask again on Monday.
As J had already reached out, I reached out to B that evening asking if he'd heard anything about an interview. Remember, I haven't talked with him in almost three weeks and we hadn't discussed the possibility that J had mentioned of an interview on Monday or Tuesday. J's mentioning of those dates got a credibility boost though when B said he was supposed to be on an interview on 'Tuesday' and then got an email saying it was canceled. He said he thought I might have changed my mind but hadn't heard anything else.
I simply responded that I was still interested and hadn't heard anything, leaving it up to him to decide if that's share worthy or not. I'd be more insistent, but I don't want it to be obvious that I have an 'in' with him to anybody else on the interview panel. I'll simply wait to hear back from J.
So, while there's no new news, there's at least confirmation that the HUM wants to interview me. I can easily imagine that the HUM set up the interview like any other contract interview, where they don't have to involve HR. At the last minute, after she has the room scheduled and her panel selected, she remembers that HR has to set up the interview and cancels it. At that point, with the holiday coming up that week, it would be easiest to simply plan for it to be next week.
I also, unfortunately, can picture the HR team there remembering me and screwing around with this process. Remember, this is the same team that insisted I would get the $5000 bonus that first year when I worked in town (back in 2015 or 2016?) and then days after I got the bonus and spent it, demanded that I pay it back. We went back and forth with them not caring that they told me I'd get the bonus and them actually making the mistake of giving me the bonus, they simply wanted the money back to cover up their mistake. It screwed me hard and I screwed with them for the next few years.
Yeah, now it might be biting me in the ass. I only put that at about a 30% chance though, as the very reason I dislike them is their incompetence and I doubt they remember me enough to be vindictive.
Anyway, the waiting game has been set for another week. I'll hopefully hear sooner rather than later, but if I don't I'll reach out to B and J next Friday.
