The last update to the 'Get To Work' series was on July 14th. I was waiting for my long term disability claim to be fully closed before I tried applying to another state job. I thought that might be a few days. MAYBE a week. My claim was officially closed on August 8th at 4:42 PM. As a final 'Fuck You' from my long term disability company, that was on a Friday, so I couldn't even do anything with it (and get anything done) until Monday.
I finished the application to the 9 localish prisons the next morning. As soon as it was submitted I sent an email to the HUM at the prison I most recently worked at (the one where I tried to get the nursing manager job). I also checked in with the two nurses there, H and B, to see what the RN positions were like. I also sent facebook messages to J and B, the nurses that work at the local prison as I listed it as well.
I heard back from B later that day and he said he'd tell his HUM. Next I heard from H and she told me that they'd lost two RNs recently, one on day shift and one on afternoon shift. I specifically didn't get too excited as she is the same nurse that told me they had a supervisor position open... which was true but she didn't know it had been filled.
I heard back from the HUM of my previous prison on Monday saying that she doesn't have any RN positions open. I found it a little strange since H had just said they lost two RNs, but she's the HUM. They might have been contract RNs. She might already have two more RNs in the works. She might have been over staffed and that equaled them out. And of course, she might just not want me there.
Anyway, I remember this process as I've applied to many state jobs through this same system, in addition to being part of the other side hiring nurses. The job I applied to is a single job listing for all facilities. You simply list which facilities you are interested in applying to and it makes your application available to only those facilities. That's why I had to make this new account as I'd already applied to this job listing but had only listed the one local prison. Now I was listing 9 prisons.
The way it should work is if a facility is looking for nurses, their HUM tells their HR department that they have an open position. The HR department sends out notice to all facilities and puts out an internal job listing. Anybody transferring within the department or within the office of the state employer gets automatic preference over an external candidate. And as a reminder, since I outright quit, I'm an external candidate again. That internal listing stays up for a certain amount of time (I think its two weeks). If there are no transfers, HR will then gather up all the applications available to them and narrow it down if needed before scheduling the interviews. So at best, I shouldn't expect any motion for a couple weeks, or another week from today.
Now most of the time when you apply for a position, it's a single position so the steps are very straight forward. The system shows that you've submitted your application. It next shows when your application has been received and who has received it (if it's a single position, there's only one facility that will receive it). When I first applied to the state back in 2013 I had to apply to a similar position as I am now, one that goes out to all facilities. When I look at that application it shows that it was submitted on a particular day and then facility A received it. Then facility B received it. Then facility C received it. Basically, as each facility looked for applicants, it shows that they got my application.
I mention all of that because when I checked the application today it still shows that the it was submitted last Saturday. But now it lists that 'Facility A' has received it. Facility A being the last facility I worked at. The same one where the HUM said she didn't have any RN positions.
Now the clearest answer for this is that she's started the process of hiring an RN and they've pulled my application. If that's true, I should expect an offer for an interview in a week or so. BUT, I won't let myself get excited about this as it might not be that. There are other explanations that might not lead to an interview.
But it is a step in the right direction. Fingers crossed, I might have an interview coming my way soon!
I will freely admit that I'm coming out of my skin with all this waiting. I thought I was free and clear to start applying to jobs in Mid June. But to get my LTD claim closed took another two months. So while I've only been truly applying for a week now, I've been waiting for two months. I'm beyond anxious. I hate waiting more, but I have to give this a month or so before I try other moves.
I do see that the nurse manager at the state hospital is still listed. That's the one that I was told had a hiring freeze. Again, it's not uncommon for them to NOT be hiring even though they have a job listing up. But I might toss my hat in that ring just to be at the ready if/when they start hiring. Again though.... that's at least a few weeks away as I'd rather work as a floor nurse at the prison rather than as a manager at the hospital.
