This should be a short post, but I wanted to at least get an update to you. I didn't have to reach out to either J or B as J reached out to me on Wednesday the 25th. She said that her boss (I'm assuming the health unit manager or HUM) is hoping to do an interview on Monday or Tuesday (the 30th or 1st) and is just waiting on the warden to give her permission to use the conference room. She, J, also said that she, the HUM, is very interested.
I didn't post that day as I was hoping to at least be able to say that I had an interview time set up. But I never heard anything back, so I'm still in the same limbo.
Now, I don't doubt J. She's a good and true friend. If she says she spoke to the HUM, then she spoke to her. What the HUM actually said, what the HUM actually meant, and if she meant to convey any of that to me, is what remains in question. Yes, technically anybody would need permission from the warden's office to use the warden's conference room (at the prisons I worked at, we got that through the warden's secretary). But the HUM doesn't necessarily decide on an interview date or time.
As I remember it, the HUM puts out a request to HR. In a situation like this, HR would gather up all of the qualified candidates and select a date that meets all of their requirements (we, as applicants, get to put in our preferred days and times of day for interviews). For instance, say all of the applicants that are available can do interviews on Tuesdays. Then HR will say that the interview must be on a Tuesday unless something odd prevents it. They then ask the HUM if the date and time(s) of day are okay, and if the HUM has their panel ready. The panel has to be diverse. It can't be three white men. It has to have gender and racial diversity. Assuming the panel is approved, the HUM would then look for where they want to have the interview, i.e. seeing if the warden's conference room is available. But generally if it's not, you then move on to other choices of place instead of other dates and times. I've been part of interviews that were in the warden's conference room as it's the nicest place for such things. There's also the deputy warden's conference room. There's also executive break rooms. I've even been part of interviews that were in storage rooms where we pulled in a table and four chairs.
Now, J is lower on the totem pole and probably hasn't been part of setting up an interview before. As a highly qualified LPN, she may have been part of an interview panel, but she wouldn't have communicated with HR and been a part of that process.
So, the part of what J said that I take comfort from is that the HUM wants to have an interview with me and that she's interested. I'd imagine between J and B talking me up, and both of them being held in high regard by the HUM, that I'd of course pique her interest. It's just a matter of working through the red tape.
And now it's just an extension of the waiting game. I'll give it another week. If I don't hear anything else by Independence Day, I'll reach out to B and J and see what's up.
While I'm not going to put any cart before any horse, I am starting to think about what I'll need to start working again. The first thing that comes to mind is scrubs. I haven't had to wear scrubs on a daily basis since 2018. During COVID I took enough floor shifts that I bought a few sets of scrubs, and was delighted that I fit into some 2XL tall scrub tops. If I'm working 12 hour shifts, I'll need at least three sets as with those shifts I owuldn't work more than three days in a row. If it's 10 hour shifts I'd need four, and if it's 8 hour shifts I'd need five. Thankfully a quick Amazon search tells me that the scrub tops I bought before are still for sale and I can get a variety of colors.
I'd also need shoes. The shoes I've worn for work for the past few years are professional looking loafers. While they're perfectly comfortable, they're not meant for a lot of walking. I'd want more comfortable shoes for actual floor nursing.
I should have everything I need to take a lunch to work. I'd need to get a boat load of Gatorade and especially with my tendency to want to nap in the middle of the day, I'd want to get me a bunch of 5 hour energy drinks. I believe I have my stethoscope in my attaché case, but if I lost that I'll need another one. But that should be it.
I'm ready to get back to work!
